Spring cleaning (the pond)

After raking the lawn, the next spring cleaning task is to clean out the pond.  This is a nasty, smelly job since it involves removing all of the dead leaves, debris, and water that has been sitting there since late fall.  As distasteful as all of this sounds, it’s a task that I actually don’t mind all that much, since it marks the beginning of spring in my backyard.

The raking is done, the pond is clean, and there are a few new perennials waiting to be planted in their new home.  The waterfall is also functional (I splurged and purchased a new pond kit with an enclosure for the pump that includes a filter).

After the pond is cleaned out,  it gets refilled with fresh water in preparation for Comet goldfish that will be added in a day or so.  The fish eat mosquito larvae and add life and color to the pond.  Water lilies and other water plants will be added as well to make the pond look natural and keep the water clean and viable for the fish.
